SESs off-site innovation key to dual MEP contract wins

SESs off-site innovation key to dual MEP contract wins

""

Leading national engineering specialist, SES Engineering Services, is building on its major success at the heart of the redevelopment of King’s Cross after winning a duo of central London new build projects, worth in excess of £30m to the business.

SES has been appointed to deliver mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services on the 12-storey S2 Grade A office building as part of the King’s Cross regeneration as well as being awarded an £18.6m MEP contract to deliver Barts Square Phase One, a new £110m high-end residential development in the St Bart’s Hospital area in Farringdon.

SES will continue its long-standing relationship with client Argent and main contractor Carillion on the commercial King’s Cross project – and will be working with Carillion and client Helical Plc for the first time to deliver 144 luxury apartments with a selection of one, two and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses located in seven property blocks.

The dual wins represent a major milestone for SES’ London and South East operation and are testament to SES’ reputation for delivering innovative, cost and time saving off-site manufacturing solutions on logistically challenging city-centre projects.

SES’ market-leading digital engineering expertise was also fundamental to its appointment on the King’s Cross S2 project, in response to the client’s requirement to deliver the very latest Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology.

As the UK’s very first M&E contractor to achieve the BRE BIM Level 2 Certification – required by Government to work on Whitehall-procured projects from April – SES’ ‘build before you build’ approach was a perfect fit for the Handyside Street project.

With a tight 38 week programme set to complete in December 2017, SES will utilise its dedicated off-site manufacturing facility SES PRISM to deliver 22 risers and a CHW roof plantroom.

Off-site manufacturing techniques via SES PRISM will play a vital role on the Barts Square project as the team is tasked to design and install service cupboards for each apartment, which in a number of variations will incorporate all essential mechanical and electrical plant and equipment.

These installations include a state-of-the-art KNX Power Distribution System to allow residents to remotely control technology throughout the apartment, a heat interface unit, a heat recovery unit, cooling interface unit, underfloor heating manifolds, BT Home Hub and space for a washing machine.

These units, built off-site, in the SES PRISM factory, represent a major efficiency and safety innovation as otherwise multiple trades would have been required to work on site in a congested area, presenting a major logistical and health and safety issue. On a confined city centre site, along with just in time delivery, these time and cost saving initiatives will be critical to the programme, set to complete in September 2017.

Dave Mason, SES Executive Business Director, said: “In securing these projects we have been able to demonstrate the value we are bringing to our key customers through our solutions-driven design processes, concluding with our own award-winning manufacturing capabilities.  Repeat business is core to our continued growth and these project wins are a reflection of the excellent work our people undertake.”

Tim Cunningham, SES Regional Director, London and South East also commented: “This is a truly exciting time for our London and South East operation and the growth of our business is down to our teams’ exemplary work and innovative off-site approach.

“Our SES PRISM facility is at the forefront of M&E installations, meaning we can offer the most effective solutions to even the most technically complex projects, adding real value to our clients so we’re delighted to be able to demonstrate this again on both these schemes.

“We’re tremendously proud of our work on The Plimsoll Building and the Gasholder residential schemes at King’s Cross so we’re thrilled to continue that relationship for the S2 office project. Likewise, our ability to deliver these critical city-centre residential schemes on time and on budget has been essential to winning the innovative and prestigious Barts Square project.”
